Moroto district together with ministry of Health has kicked off three days measles vaccination for children between six months and five years in all sub counties in the district.
On 18th, June this year, Ministry of health declared Measles outbreak in Moroto district.
According to Moroto district Health Officer Doctor James Lemkol , the district has registered one hundred thirteen(113) cases and four death.
Dr. Lemukol describe the current situation as imported epidemic from Turkana, Kenya.
Our neighbor Turkana in Kenya has been battling with measles outbreak for the one last year especially in western Turkana,’Lemukol said ‘’.
Around September /October last year the outbreak spread to Loima sub county which neighbors Moroto district,’Lemkol added’.
The most affected sub counties are Rupa and Lotisan although it has spread to Moroto Municipality, Katikekire and other sub counties in the district.
Lemukol explains that they are challenged by cross-border movements especially by the pastoralists in sub counties of Rupa and Lotisan move from one place to another in search for pasture and water for their animals.
He further explains that the, affected children have other co -infections like e malaria and are malnourished.
Those who died were severely malnourished,’Lemukol’ said.
However, the district is Challenged by insecurity especially in the affected sub counties.
Meanwhile the districts of Napak and Nabilatuk have also registered one case each.
